Wordpress 2.5.1 Upgrade Bug: Write Post and Auto Save
Posted on May 01, 2008 by Ashleigh
For the past week I’ve been noticing the “WordPress 2.5.1 is available! Please update now.” alert that sits just underneath the header of all admin pages of this blog. After having read the particular bugs that had been fixed in the new 2.5.1 release, I decided I should upgrade. I’m not a newbie when it comes to WordPress and I knew what I was doing when replacing the wp-admin and wp-includes folders and uploading the other files. What I didn’t expect however was to run into a massive problem after upgrading: I was no longer able to post!
Having promptly reverted to WordPress 2.5 the inabilty of being able to post disappeared and all was normal again. I spent the next hour investigating the problem (Google <3) and it turns out I wasn’t the only one to experience the Write Post/Auto Save error after upgrading. The problem many were experiencing was the result of the AJAX Auto Save feature, which saves your drafts automatically, kicking into a repeating cycle which stops you from being able to do anything on that page and in turn locks up your browser.
Whilst there is no complete fix for this problem, there are a couple of workarounds that people have tried with some success. I decided to revert to WordPress 2.5 for the time being but obviously that mightn’t be the best option for most people, particularly those with higher traffic and frequent exploit attempts. If you would still like to upgrade (or already have upgraded and are experiencing the Auto Save problem) I suggest you take a look at the following forum post regarding this bug.
